Episode:Thought Adjusters—Relation to the Soul (Part 1)

From Symmetry of Soul

The concept of a soul and of an indwelling spirit is not new to Urantia; it has frequently appeared in the various systems of planetary beliefs. Men have long believed that there is something growing within the human nature, something vital that is destined to endure beyond the short span of temporal life.

Summary by Kermit

We briefly discussed some of the specifics of Thought Adjuster (TA) fusion of material mortals citing [55:1]. Also concerning the beautiful message from a Monitor to a destiny reservist, the point was made that the content of this message is a touching example of a Mystery Monitor’s admonitions to the subject of his indwelling, as “one who warns.”

Paper 111. The Adjuster and the Soul

We are told that neither science nor philosophy can attain a satisfactory comprehension of the evolving soul because of the presence of the divine Adjuster in the human mind. To more clearly understand this statement we turned to [13:1.22, p. 147]. Here we find that the aforementioned comprehension must await our discovery of the secrets of Ascendington. Only those who fuse with their TAs will ever understand the profound mystery of the evolution of an immortal morontia soul in the mind of a material mortal. Even so, this understanding of both the logic and the physics of the creation and growth of the soul must wait until after our arrival in Havona.

For further elaboration on the phrase “the morontia soul is the child of the universe...” we went to [117:4.8, 1284] where we read, “It is out of the very reality of the Supreme that the Adjuster, with the consent of the human will, weaves the patterns of the eternal nature of an ascending son of God.” Consecrating the mind to the universal harmony is certainly the technique whereby we develop cosmic character but the literal substance of the soul that is being built by the TA is mysterious because of the elements involved, the weaving together of spirit and energy. Think of the soul as a downstepped expression of the Supreme Being (the Oversoul over the total finite.) Remember, it is the experiential nature of the TA, in relation to the experiential Deity of the Supreme that produces the foundation for the soul. This entire process represents a fundamental synchronization of experiential reality.

Why do we read that the soul is really known only through cosmic insight and spiritual discovery? In literal terms, the fact that is the soul is above mind. Thus insight, not sight is required to recognize the soul. A spiritual stimulus coming down into the upper boundary of the mind is the “spiritual discovery” through which we begin to become aware of the soul, i.e., transcendent of current consciousness.

The remainder of the preface to this paper provided an historical span of various beliefs and concepts of the soul and spirit held by our distant ancestors. Depending on the nature and specificity of these ideas we can begin to infer whether they originated from the normal reflections of the primitive mind, or were derived from revelatory teachings of ancient times. In any case, for the most part the words spirit and soul have come down to us in our various languages derived primarily from the words for breath. Suffice it to say that every race of evolving Urantia mortals has a word equivalent to the concept of soul.

111:1. The Mind Arena of Choice

We did not complete this section during the broadcast. We read and discussed the first six paragraphs and spent some time describing two analogies for mind, both of which have been introduced on previous broadcasts. The “vertical column” model consisting of levels of consciousness is particularly helpful in envisioning the full span of mind from the material brain at the bottom up to the level of spirit at the top, thus encompassing both the material mindal self and the morontia soul self.

The hourglass analogy with its lower and upper domain encompasses the material self. I will not detail these analogies in this summary, but strongly recommend the serious student review the broadcast for the specifics of these model as they are most helpful in grasping the logic and the “physics” of the mechanics and dynamics of the relations of mind, spirit, soul, and personality.

The domain of mind that is subject to our will is represented in the hourglass analogy. On one hand the revelators present the binary nature of the role of the decision forms in the mind that either portray the exquisite melodies of God identification and consequent eternal survival, or the discords of destruction. While on the other hand, they graciously comfort us with the promise that it is not so much what the mind comprehends or what the mind is like, as what the mind desires to comprehend and desires to be, that constitutes spirit identification, and thus survival. It is our qualities of perfecting and not our qualities of perfection that ensure our survival. Further, we are reminded of the difference between salvation (resurrection)—assured by grace, and survival (immortality) secured by faith grasp and fusion.
