Episode:The Fifth Epochal Revelation to Urantia (Part 7)

From Symmetry of Soul

The superhuman authors of The Urantia Papers inform us that the revelation of truth is very rigorously limited by the instructions of their superiors. Revelators must act in accordance with the instructions which form a part of their revelation mandate. They also state that the cosmology of this latest revelation is not inspired; they go on to define revelation and outline its immense value to our confused world.

Summary by Kermit

As explained by the author of Paper 19, humans would ordinarily seek to approach the revelation’s cosmic philosophy from the simple and finite to the complex and infinite (BOTTOM-UP). This path leads to some understanding of man’s origin, but little or nothing about his divine destiny. Beginning with the infinite and progressing to the finite (TOP-DOWN) leads to spiritual wisdom. Discussion of this point invoked the six levels of meaning (LoM) and their associated correlation with the seven adjutant mind spirits, three cosmic intuitions and the oft referred to hourglass analogy. Review of the broadcast archive of this portion of the show leads to an edifying explanation of the difference between the wisdom derived from the 7th adjutant mind spirit of the same name on the third LoM and spiritual wisdom which encompasses the wholeness of all six LoM, attained when the fullness of the Holy Spirit comes down from the unified and harmonized upper domain of the hourglass—the COSMIC PERSPECTIVE.

Further discussion of the TOP-DOWN, BOTTOM-UP paradigms in approaching the revelation emphasized the importance of avoiding turning these into dichotomous polarities. It’s not that one is good and the other is bad. The goal is to utilize both simultaneously to attain a 3-D perspective of reality, for the Supreme is the embodiment of both perspectives.

Further concerning the philosophic nature of the revelation, it was pointed out that the superadditive fact of cosmic philosophy is higher than either science or religion and encompassing both. This is in contrast to mankind’s present day confusion wherein science and religion are seen as island polarities with little to connect them. Of note, in the revelation, the word “philosophy” occurs before “religion”, and “philosophic” before “religious”. And the word “religion” doesn’t occur at all in the Foreword.

101:4. The Limitations of Revelation

Careful reading and unpacking of this section proved most illuminating. The word “cosmology” was explored in its dual meaning of universal harmony and harmonizing universe. We approached cosmology as the vastness of individuality in the threefold association of cosmology-philosophy-religion. Cosmology presented as a part of revealed religion is destined to be outgrown quickly, with the accompanying problem of future students discarding any element of religious truth because they discover errors on the face of such cosmology.

In the preface to Paper 30 the Mighty Messenger explains that the personality register of the Grand Universe is incomplete. He goes on to say that to provide a complete register would deprive the thinking mortals of the next thousand years of that stimulus to creative speculation which these partially revealed concepts supply. Simply stated, overrevelation stifles the imagination, thus, implying that this revelation and its associated cosmology are to stand for a thousand years. So how can the revelators produce a philosophic text whose cosmology will not be outgrown quickly, and still cleave to their rigorous mandate to not anticipate the scientific discoveries of a thousand years? We find a brilliant example in Paper 12:4. Using our knowledge of the day (1934) for the Hubble constant, we are ingeniously given the distance of 300 million light years to the middle of the 2nd outer space level, as well as inferentially informed that our value for the Hubble constant is in need of revision, all without introducing error.

The authors explain that truth is always a revelation, whether autorevelation (the product of the work of the Adjuster) or epochal (presented by some other celestial agency, group or personality).

While revelation is invariably a spiritual phenomenon, the revelation of truth is only relatively inspired the statements with reference to cosmology are never inspired, but are of great value in clarifying knowledge by:

  1. The authoritative elimination of error.
  2. The coordination of known or about-to-be-known facts and observations.
  3. The restoration of important bits of lost knowledge concerning epochal transactions of the distant past.
  4. Supplying information which will fill in vital missing gaps in otherwise earned knowledge.
  5. Presenting cosmic data to illuminate the spiritual teachings contained in the accompanying revelation, thereby providing the threefold triunity of cosmic consciousness.
