Three cosmic intuitions

Famously, in [16:6] without huge fanfare our authors introduce a concept deeply foundational to our understanding of our place in the cosmos: the three cosmic intuitions. The levels are:

  1. Causation—the reality domain of the physical senses, the scientific realms of logical uniformity, the differentiation of the factual and the nonfactual, reflective conclusions based on cosmic response. This is the mathematical form of the cosmic discrimination.
  2. Duty—the reality domain of morals in the philosophic realm, the arena of reason, the recognition of relative right and wrong. This is the judicial form of the cosmic discrimination.
  3. Worship—the spiritual domain of the reality of religious experience, the personal realization of divine fellowship, the recognition of spirit values, the assurance of eternal survival, the ascent from the status of servants of God to the joy and liberty of the sons of God. This is the highest insight of the cosmic mind, the reverential and worshipful form of the cosmic discrimination.


Our authors explain that cultivation and skillful mind activity on these levels is one of the most basic things that sets us apart from other animals—they allow us to be truly human and be unnatural. Through encircuitment in the Holy Spirit, we are provided access to these cosmic intuitions. They are bestowed upon us, by grace, at around age 6. So really it's a matter of ensuring we don't use our free will to turn away from them (free will is that powerful). Ideal education is supposed to help us "develop and sharpen these innate endowments of the human mind." That is, education should help us take delight in cultivating... an objective consciousness that stands above our animal-origin subjective consciousness.

Although these are presented in The Urantia Book, "clear-reasoning and deep-thinking" minds have come upon them before. For example, from the United States Northwest ordinance: "Religion, morality, and knowledge, being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged."[1] If you have eyes to see and ears to hear, you can plainly see this calling out the three cosmic intuitions in reverse order (knowledge is an etymological synonym for science), as well the observation that education is key is realizing them.
