Episode:Thought Adjusters—Relation to Individual Mortals (Part 3)
The Thought Adjusters are engaged in a constant effort so to spiritualize our minds as to evolve our morontia souls, but there exists a vast gulf between man and God. We are so devoid of courageous decisions and consecrated cooperation that our indwelling Adjusters find it next to impossible to communicate directly with the human mind.

Discussion and Commentary on Chat Room Question from Last Week
SoS spent a large portion of the first hour discussing several question from the last week’s chat room.
The phenomenon familiar to longtime students of the revelation of having a question arise while reading, that is answered in the text immediately following, was briefly discussed. It is attributed to the way the authors construct the text, with a keen understanding of the mechanics and dynamics of human thought so as to answer these inevitable questions in the flow of their narrative. Knowing this, can we remain in the moment of our reading and study, trusting in the flow of the revelation to lead us into these discoveries without thinking or rushing ahead?
The question that stimulated even further chat room participation was a comment about the implications and consequences of taking Jesus’ directive to his disciples to take their salvation for granted. For the past two thousand years—post-Pentecost, every normal and minded morally conscious individual has been given a Thought Adjuster by grace, and thereby has a soul. Upon death of the flesh the soul is resurrected on Mansion World #1. Resurrection is virtually automatic, but eternal survival is forever dependent upon a wholehearted choice on the part of the potential ascender.
The pre-Pentecost mentality that one’s resurrection depends upon something other than grace remains a powerful belief contaminating present day religious systems. This corrupting belief betrays a fear of death and a desire for survival centered upon self. Freely living, truly loving and selflessly serving one’s fellows is impossible if salvation is conditional. It is by such living, taking our salvation for granted, that we testify to the truth of the gospel. Followers of Jesus share his faith and trust that no real harm can come to them. Jesus was the 4th ER to all mankind, a dispensational revelation for all. His Spirit of Truth was poured out upon all flesh.
The 5th ER is not a dispensational revelation. It is not intended nor required that the 5th ER be embraced by the whole world. Rather it is expected that a core of cosmically aware individuals will recognize and engage the revelation and embody the truths contained therein so as to provide the necessary anchor points for the continuation and progress of civilization. The model for dissemination of these truths of higher meanings and values is suggested in the administrations of the Planetary Prince and the Material Son and Daughter. They identified individuals with requisite capacity and receptivity to instruct and guide, subsequently encouraging them to return to their “communities” to uplift and instruct their fellows. The 5th ER is not received well by the masses of today. We have frequently mentioned on SoS that the 5th ER has been given to our world because civilization is in jeopardy due to a shortage of cosmically conscious men and women. It is this core of citizens on whom the maintenance and progress of civilization depends.
110:4. The Adjuster’s Work in the Mind
In considering the TA’s work in our minds, it is most important to be aware of the enormous differential in nature between TAs and evolutionary mortals. Lack of commonness of nature and absence of responsive recognition on the part of us mortals make it very infrequent that we are able to receive much of the wealth of wisdom and truth the TA is waiting to transmit to us. The tadpole-frog and child of God-adult of God comparisons were used to illustrate this difference of nature. The TA is an adult like influence from eternity. Our responsive recognition is the reality response given to us by the Holy Spirit in the the three cosmic intuitions. This objective means of the recognition of things, meanings, and values, while innate and self-evident is not well developed in present day mankind our authors record sadly. But these deficits notwithstanding, the TA is very active (unconscious to us) in the upper reaches of our superconscious. This underscores the fact that our conscious experience is only a fraction of our total experience. As immature children of the universe we are quite incapable of detecting the difference between our material mind and TA-soul activity. As we are reminded the TA’s work is to spiritualize our minds and evolve our souls.
Our author instructs us regarding our conscious experiences involving abrupt presentations of thoughts, conclusions, and other pictures of mind. Sometimes they may be the direct or indirect work of the TA, but more often they represent normal and ordinary psychic function inherent the circuits of our evolving animal mind. Our discussion revolved around the importance of understanding that our experience consists of activities in sub-, and superconscious realms (hence unconscious) as well as activity in the conscious realms.
Our discussion of paragraph number four of this section helped clarify the admonition, “trust all matters of mind beyond the dead level of consciousness to the custody of the Adjusters.” The meaning of the term “dead level of consciousness” was clarified to mean the very precise and narrow band of consciousness in an otherwise comparatively vast expanse that is the mind, as mentioned in the Foreword as “the total conscious and unconscious experience.” Thus, we are to restrain our efforts to penetrate above this “dead level” in quest of TA contact, but trust our unconscious realms to the keeping of our divine indweller.
The vast gulf between the human and divine, along with the fact that we are so animal-like in our behavior and emotional in our reactions, being subject to the almost complete control of our electro-chemical makeup explains the great difficulty our Monitors have in guiding and directing us. Add to this our lack of courageous decisions and consecrated cooperation and it is no wonder the indwelling Adjusters find it next to impossible to communicate directly with the human mind. Further, when they do manage to flash a gleam of new truth to the soul, this often is so disruptive as to lead to disastrous results, e.g. fanaticism. Such is the origin of many a new religion and strange “ism.”
The final paragraph of this section contains a most intriguing comment regarding the biologic and genetic deficits resulting in the decline over generations of beings able to function safely with self-acting Adjusters. We can only speculate about the proposals of some of our more immediate planetary supervisors who advocate the inauguration of measures designed to foster and conserve the higher spiritual types of the Urantia races. These deficits, while certainly handicapping, do demand greater efforts on our part to supply favorable conditions for growth and to cultivate courageous and independent cosmic thinking. These virtues are considerably facilitated by a more robust and fit biological and genetic foundation.
