John Fiske, Edward Livingston Youmans (New York, 1894).

  • Biography of Youmans.
  • Science popularizer who took a major shine to Herbert Spencer.
  • p. 104: Became impressed by Spencer's trending toward a general theory of evolution in 1858, before Darwin had published.
  • p. 107: Offered to help Spencer any way he could to realize his "Syntheic Philosophy" concept.
  • p. 290: Youmans wrote "...the publication of his little book [The Study of Sociology], which I bullied him to write..." (emphasis added)
  • p. 301-302: Decided he had to found his own monthly magazine to (1) allow Spencer's works to be pubished legitimately instead of pirated, and (2) to have a place for his own voice.
    • He got the magazine spun up in just 3 weeks! It was Popular Science Monthly.
  • Popular Science Monthly was a success! Within a year, circulation of 11,000 (p. 302, 313, 314)
  • It was also quit controversial. Clergy and many households refused to read it because of the preponderance of evolutionary [Godless?] thought in it. (p. 313)
