Do not confuse and confound the mission and influence of the Adjuster with what is commonly called conscience; they are not directly related. Conscience is a human and purely psychic reaction. It is not to be despised, but it is hardly the voice of God to the soul, which indeed the Adjuster’s would be if such a voice could be heard.

110:5. Erroneous Concepts of Adjuster Guidance

We spent the first half hour examining the nature of conscience and the mission and nature of the Adjuster. Conscience, the urge to do right takes origin in the three cosmic intuitions we access upon encircuitment in the Holy Spirit. As described in Paper 16:6, these CIs are the mathematical, judicial, and reverential-worshipful discriminators. Initially these discriminators do not provide specific details about these domains. The second CI, the moral discriminator, becomes identified with the mores among which we live early in our experience. Depending on the developmental stage of the mores, true morality may or may not (most often not) underlie the dictates of conscience. Conscience denotes the relationship with the mores (subjective), while true moral consciousness implies conformity to the cosmos (objective.)

In our discussion, using the hourglass analogy of the mind and the meaning of the word “conscience”—with knowledge, a picture of the conscience emerged, as the urge of the CI from above in association with the knowledge (from the mores) in the lower domain, to do the right thing. As mind is more able to align with the cosmos (CIs), the Adjuster (a “nugget” from the cosmos) is able to catalyze cosmic attunement. Thus conscience, an evolutionary functional aspect of the mind, when identified with personality (a focusing influence) can be a conduit for the cosmos into daily life. But as we remember, the CIs are accessible through the faculty of reflective thinking. Without such thinking, the CIs are merely the initial assumptions for conscience, which then consists merely of the admonitions of the mores.

We had an interesting sidebar discussion on the extensive and intensive meanings of the word cosmos in response to a comment in the chat room. Extensively, cosmos is to be interpreted as the harmonizing universe, an evolutionary, experiential bottom up phenomenon. Intensively it becomes the universal harmony, a top down quasi-existential influence from eternity.

Man’s dream life is another arena wherein there exists great confusion concerning the Adjuster’s activity in the mind. Our discussion included recognition of the revelator’s precision in his/her use of language. It is an invitation to reflection, which should lead to an understanding that both conscience and dreams are not what they may initially appear to be. The disconnected and disordered dream experiences are cited as proof of the Adjuster’s failure to harmonize and associate the divergent factors of man’s mind. The limited coordinating (harmonizing) and associating influence of the spiritualized mind we have by grace during wakefulness, is more or less absent during sleep. Thus are dreams disordered and disconnected. The Adjuster is rarely able to coordinate and synchronize two such unlike and diverse types of thinking as the human and the divine. Should they succeed, Adjuster fusion translates such a soul directly to the mansion worlds.

This should disabuse us of interpreting our dream life as divine guidance, although we did mention that there are cases disclosed in the revelation where key figures were persuaded of important facts requiring their action as the result of dreams.

During sleep Adjusters attempt to achieve only that which the will of the indwelt personality has previously approved. This approval is in the form of decisions and choosings made during wakeful consciousness. These decision forms are products of personal decisions stemming from actual will (choice), and become lodged in the supermind. By “lodged”, we are encouraged to think of a dynamic flow with a momentum derived from personality identification, which the TA can “adjust.” These “decisions and choosings”, when made in conformity with the cosmos become the favorable conditions which allow you to be grown. They represent a facet of self-mastery wherein the two domains of mind are more cosmically ordered, hence conducive to cosmic circle progress. In order for cosmic order to be realized it must be chosen. It is never imposed. This discussion led to consideration of the two consecrations often referred to by SoS. Our first, consecration of the will to the perfect will of God the Father is initially made without detail or content. It is the consecration of the mind to conformity with the cosmos, the universal harmony of God the Mother that provides the content that can be encompassed by personality (will). Thus the appropriate sequence of our efforts in our consecrations becomes, to first strike step with the cosmos (universal harmony), then to encompass this harmony with personality (will) in alignment with God the Father (resident in our minds as the TA). This has the effect of differentiating (individuating) the person from the Supreme (the whole). Should the initial mindal consecration be un-cosmic-like, the individuating step initiates separation from the cosmos, a problem indeed.

The Adjuster’s so-called failure to make efficient contact in registering their creations in the higher levels of the material mind has nothing to do with the existential perfection of the TA, but rather with the lack of experiential nature of the TA which grows along with the Supreme. The TA fails for the same reason we do, lack of requisite wisdom. The TA is not a magic fact. He is not so far removed from his host, which is why Personalized TAs can be denominated ascending sons, as are we.

The absurdities of dream life testify to both the pressure of unexpressed emotions as well as the distortions of the TA’s representations of his spiritual concepts. The resultant admixture of the human and divine demonstrates the peril of attempting to properly interpret auto-revelatory phenomena. Is the content thereof pertaining to eternity or time? Yet dreams do have normal and natural functions that are not in the realm of TA activity or communication.

The remainder of the section pertained to the dangers of postulating as to the TA content of dream life or thinking that every new concept originating in the mind is the dictation of the TA. We are warned that it is better to err in rejecting an Adjuster’s expression, believing it to be purely human than the other way around.

Our subsequent conversation extended to some of the specific processes involved in the dangers discussed above. By example the “sleeping subject’s” attitude of apparent indifference to the TA activity involved in communicating the revelation serves to recommend trust and humility in our approach to cooperation with our indwelling Monitor.
